October 27 is the Day of Ukrainian writing and language

21 Oct 2025

The Ukrainian language is one of the oldest, sweetest-sounding and most unique languages in the world. In terms of melodiousness, it ranks second in the world after the Italian one.
The holiday of Ukrainian writing and language was started in 1997 by the Decree of the President of Ukraine Leonid Kuchma. Traditionally, it was celebrated on November 9 — the day of commemoration of Venerable Nestor the Chronicler, a monk of the Kyiv-Pechersk Monastery, a thinker and scientist who started the tradition of Ukrainian chronicles and preserved the history of our state for posterity.
Starting from 2024, Ukraine celebrates the Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language on October 27 — in connection with the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine to the New Julian calendar. The President of Ukraine signed the relevant decree on changing the date of the celebration on July 28, 2023.
On the occasion of the holiday, the associate professor of the department of general scientific, social and behavioral disciplines of the Odesa Institute of the MAUP Nataliya Mykolaivna Borysenko prepared a presentation dedicated to the Day of Ukrainian writing and language. Its goal was to draw attention to modern problems of the development of the Ukrainian language, popularize Ukrainian culture, and increase the prestige of the state language.
Students of the first year of the first (bachelor) level of all majors actively participated in the event. Special attention was drawn by the creative performance of a student of the "Law" specialty of St. Dmytro, who set to music a poem by an unknown author dedicated to the Ukrainian language. The song sounded inspired, in a wonderful performance and the author's own musical arrangement.
Traditionally, on this day, the Petro Yatsyk International Contest of Ukrainian Language Experts starts, as well as the radio dictation of national unity, which this year will be held on October 27 at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is invited to write a dictation - teachers, students and employees of the institute.
The Day of Ukrainian Writing and Language unites Ukrainians all over the world. It is a holiday of love for one's native language, respect for cultural traditions and awareness of one's national identity.
